Starting a Food Blog

  • How to Start a Food Blog – Looking to start your very own food blog but don’t know where to begin? I’ve been there, believe me. Here’s a step-by-step guide I’ve put together that will get you up and running in no time.
  • Food Blogger Pro – If you’re looking for the ultimate resource on all things food blogging, this is it. The Food Blogger Pro community and website have been such an invaluable resource for me on this blogging journey. The site features a library of over 300 videos on everything under the sun from food photography and photo editing to building traffic and generating income from your blog. The best part for me has been the super active forums with over 1,800 members that really just want to help each other out. I’ve made connections with lots of wonderful food bloggers thanks to Food Blogger Pro. HIGHLY recommend signing up for at least a month to try it out or get on the wait list.

Building Site Traffic

  • MailChimp – After you’ve got your blog up and running, one of the first things you’re going to want to do is start building a mailing list. MailChimp is a great option, especially if you’re just starting out. With their free service, MailChimp allows you to store up to 2,000 subscribers and send up to 12,000 emails per month! In addition to great analytics and features like group segmentation, they also have beautiful, customizable email templates. So what are you waiting for? Go out there and send your first email. Did I mention it’s free?
  • ConvertKit – If you’re looking to get more serious about growing your email list, I highly recommend ConvertKit. I recently made the switch from MailChimp to ConvertKit and couldn’t be happier! ConvertKit makes it super duper easy to target specific subscribers and give them what they want – aka segmentation. MailChimp is great for newbies, but ConvertKit is the tool to get when you’re serious about turning your blog into a business.
  • Tailwind – If you’re looking to get serious about growing your Pinterest following, Tailwind is your best friend. Not only does Tailwind allow you to schedule pins to your heart’s content, it also has powerful analytics that help you figure out what is working and what needs to be tweaked.
  • BoardBooster – This is another popular Pinterest scheduling tool that allows you to schedule pins and “loop” boards so that you don’t constantly have to be on the platform finding content to share.

Food Photography Tools

Nikon D3300 – This is the first DSLR camera that I ever purchased. If you’re still very new to photography (as in you’ve never owned a DSLR camera before), I highly recommend this. It’s an inexpensive option (compared to other DSLRs) and is great for beginners who have outgrown their iPhone camera.

Nikon D750 – This is the second DSLR camera I ever purchased and what I use to shoot all the photos on the blog today. It’s quite the upgrade to my older D3300 and is worth every penny.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 – This is the first camera lens that I ever purchased (besides the two lenses that came in my Nikon D3300 camera bundle) and is what I use to take most of the overhead photos that you see on the blog today. Sometimes referred to as the “Nifty Fifty,” this is a great quality lens for the price and I would recommend it as a first lens for any food photographer on a budget.

Nikon 105mm f/2.8 – This is the lens that I use for the other 50%. It’s perfect for drool-worthy super close up shots of food that allow you to show all the wonderful textures that can make your photos stand out.
